Cadenhead Small Batch Tullibardine 1993 22yo
700ml 47.30%
  Ret
$199.00

I have a soft spot for Tullibardine, don't really know why? Maybe the whiskies that I have tried from here are just charmingly rich and gentle. From Mark Watt, "An unexpected all spice note hits first, growing into something sweeter and creamier, like shortbread and clotted cream with a drop of water the sweet tones are towards the front of the palate then coating the whole middle palate."

Deanston 12yo
700ml 46.30%

$120.00

Well I never! I bought Deanston and that is a first. But OMG this current release is clean, no faults, has good oak and tastes rather good in a simple way. Definitely not like the old days.

Deanston 18yo

Wonders never cease! A couple of years back I would not have given you tuppence for the stuff that was coming out of Deanston. Then with new owners, a tasting in Adelaide and meeting the distiller changed my opinion completely. Finally the distillery worked out how to produce a decent and classy whisky. So I was quite excited when this turned up...an aged Deanston! Double distilled, matured in ex bourbon hoggies then top dressed infirst fill bourbon oak and bottled at 46.3% alc. As one retailer put it, "The result is classic, pure, and outstanding. Rich vanilla and malted barley make up the core constituents of flavor, a creamy and supple mouthfeel adds to that delight, and the finish is loaded with oiliness and a lip-smacking note of honey and citrus."

Wonders never cease! A couple of years back I would not have given you tuppence for the stuff that was coming out of Deanston. Then with new owners, a tasting in Adelaide and meeting the distiller changed my opinion completely. This is brand new to me and I had to take it beacuse of the sherry in it. What a treat. According to the distillery, "rich and spicy palate” with flavours of nutmrg and gingerbread."

Duthies Blair Athol 13yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$110.00

A smallish Diageo distillery residing in the Eastern Highlands at Pitlochry, was an early starter, having been founded in 1798. A major part of the Bells Blend, I haven't really seen too many single malts from this distillery, but the house style has been described as big and chunky with a hint of spice, while Serge Valentin's profile describes: Tea Wood Liquorice Caramel Roasted Beer Herbal Oranges Pepper Butter. Pic indicative only.

Glenmorangie 10yo Original
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$75.00

I recently had the chance to reacquaint myself with the entire range of Glenmorangies. This new Original replaces the old 10yo, and I remember at the time that there was some criticism surrounding the change over. But let me allay your fears, this "new" 10yo Original, yes it says 10yo on the back label. This malt is so pure and perfumed with just the right amount of creamy oak. On the palate it's creamy, intense and lingering and that highly complex & fruity spirit that Glenmorangie's high stills are famous for, still shines through. Benchmark stuff!!

Glenmorangie 12yo Nectar D'or Sauternes Cask Finish
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$140.00

This is certainly going against the tide. Where most distilleries are ditching their age statements, Glenmorangie proudly upgrades theirs! Typical bright, intensive and citrusy Glenmorangie spirit partially matured in French oak that contained that very sweet, botrytised wine of Bordeaux: Sauternes. To me it’s one of their best topped dressed yet.

Glenmorangie 18yo Extremely Rare
700ml 43.00%

$200.00

GIFT The new, whizzed up version of the 18yo. And by whizzed up, I mean, take a look at the packaging! You can certainly see the French influence here BUT the spirit is oh so very Scottish. Fifteen years in Ex Bourbon barrels then an additional 3 years in sherry oak. Peach, white chocolate, coconut, dried fruits, honey and very creamy malt flavours. On the palate it's very long but quite narrow. The overall effect: very pleasing, very elegant. As one pundit says, this is the " Blanc de Blanc" of malt whisky. For Xmas 2015 this magig dram comes with a bonus Glenmo ice bucket!

Big note from WhiskyFun, "Always loved this one, the last version I've tried was bottled circa 2010 (WF 90). Colour: full gold. Nose: this is the perfect 'traditional' Glenmorangie, honeyed and floral at first nosing then fruitier and more on milk chocolate and dried fruits such as figs and pears. What I really enjoy a lot are all the tinier and more complex aromas that show up one after the other, like in an old Sauternes or a very old Monbazillac (so cheap at auctions!) So notes of wine that do not come from wine, in a way. Tobacco, ripe plums, sultanas, beeswax... Mouth: exactly the same flavours and aromas, the palate is an extension of the nose, which is great. Only the strength is a bit low, 45 or 46% would work even better in my opinion. Touches of salt on top of the orange cake, honey, figs, sultanas etc. Finish: more Demerara sugar, Seville oranges and speculoos, and more tannicity. Touches of ginger but it's all fine. Comments: remains very high in my book. SGP:651 - 90 points."

Glenmorangie Lasanta
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$130.00

Lastanta, the new model that replaces the old Olroso Sherry finish. An easy going style, plenty of dried fruit, nuts & toffee flavours, some sweet/pulpy fruit notes and a soft, finishes softly with hints of spiced orange and hazelnuts. it's sherried gentleness is quite engaging. Oh, and by the way, I believe Lasanta is actually Gaelic for warmth & passion.

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$110.00

The Quinta Ruben is the current rendition of the old Glenmorangie Port Finish. But this time, the 6 months top dressing has gone as the ex bourbon matured spirit is now aged for an additional 2 years in used Port pipes. belive me, this makes a difference as the extra maturation promotes more substantial oak flavours than fleeting wine notes. It's fruity and richly scented on the nose but on the palate there is initially some tight intensive flavours that give way toa luscious, fruit sweet middle palate. The finish is crisply dry and there's loads of Glenmorangie's famed spirirt complexity. Nice one! Buxton's 101.

One of Diageo's "classic" malts, very perfumed, fruity and mildly spicy malt with just a hint of peat. Buxton's 101.

Old Pulteney 12yo

A beaut introduction to this classic salty, seaside malt. Sheery influenced and rated as one of the Ten Best Scotch Whiskies by Charles MacLean for the Independent newspapaer in 2009! "An elegant malt from Wick...this has a lighlty maritime charachter and goes well with fish and seafood". Well said Mr MacLean.

Nestling in the township of Wick near John O'Groat, comes the malts of this vastly overlooked and underrated distillery of Old Pulteney. Thanks to Inverhouse, this a brand that is going under some much needed re-vitalisation. The 17yo is sweet, fruity on the nose with a hint of woodiness and butterscotch plus the distinctive Pulteney sea breeze. Full bodied with vanilla and floral overtones and a long-lasting finish. No chill filtering and praise be the Lord, they claim no caramel colouring. Buxton's 101.

This is a relatively new release from this vastly underrated distillery. It is surprisingly light and fruity with hints of honey, vanilla and smoke, the finish is dry & very smooth. Jim Murray's Scottish Whisky of the Year in 2015 and World Whisky Of Year in 2012, at 97.5pts, as he states, "absolutely exploding from the glass with vitality, charisma and class."

The latest from Old P and a sure sign of the modern age: no age statement. This seaside dram that is matured in both American and Spanish sherry casks. In their words, "Full-bodied and rich in flavour. A burst of honey, cocoa and oranges eases into a long-lasting, spicy finish with a maritime surprise at the end." And with no peat!

Wolfburn 3yo 2016 Standard Release
700ml 46.00%

$120.00

Well it's finally arrived! Scotland's newest distillery with an actual single malt for sale. The distillery is built on the site of the original Wolfburn that closed 150 years ago! And this release comes from the spirit distilled for the first time since 1866 in 2013. For the moment I am going to let Dave Broom at ScotchWhisky.com describe this brand new dram, "Nose Light and soft with poached pear and a hint of clove and vanilla, then some smoky wood/ burnt bannocks. Becomes more scented, with elements of privet and cherry blossom, then lemon balm and a huge hit of fresh mint. Becomes increasingly like a quality reposado Tequila which is no bad thing in my world. Palate: Well balanced. A peppery start – there’s that reposado again. Sweet, softly fruited, but feisty, and even at 46% it needs water. This reveals the youth, but the spirit is clean and characterful, soft and slightly unctuous and showing good weight, which will allow it to grow. Finish: Medium length. Lightly smoky. Conclusion: Aged in quarter casks (from an Islay distillery) to give a quick boost to a young spirit. I’ve been impressed with Wolfburn’s quality from the word go and this doesn’t disappoint. One to watch. The score reflects its competitive set. Right place, right time: Lost in a Mexican herb garden. Score: 8/10."

Blackadder Raw Cask Auchentoshan 1991 23yo

$290.00

Blackadder Raw Cask: It's the one with the bits in it and at cask strength! And for 2016, a triple distilled whisky, famous for it's lightness...but not in this form! Cask strength and so very well aged. All American oak matured, only 144 bottles produced. Notes from an OS retailer, "Ha! A lot happening in this one, with many oranges and many aromatic herbs plus many tinned fruits, esp. litchis. Blood oranges, cranberries, a little green cardamom, some jellybeans and a wee feeling of good sauvignon blanc. Again, lots happening. With water: perfect, fresh, fruity and slightly cakey. Comments: swims like a champ. As good as a middle-aged Auchentoshan can get."

The famed triple from outside Glasgow returns in 2016, in Mr Watt's immortal words, "Who said whisky is a winter drink! This is the best example of a summer malt you would ever want with a twist for a lowland that just makes it that little more special, Small amount of salt, but with cream and the summer flavours remerging. Yes a slight saltiness was in the middle palate and the finish that gave the dram a rather nice uplift that took us by surprise."
