WORLD WHISKIES
Kavalan Oloroso Sherry Oak
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$250.00

This distillery has certainly struck a chord with whisky aficionados across the globe. I’ve been told that this is a detuned, ie lower alcohol, Soloist. According to MaltMileage, “Overall, Kavalan sherry oak is a balanced, smooth, integrated, powerful, rich and flavoursome dry sherry bomb that projects hues of barley that glisten through the intricately woven oak notes.” And as he says, “it’s one of my favourites.” And scores it 94/100.

Kavalan Soloist Sherry Cask
700ml 58.70%
  Ret
$300.00

I was gobsmacked when I tasted this dark dram with my colleagues in the Flinders’ Ranges the other week. It was oh so soft, lush and mouthfilling, very fruity, touches of furniture polish, kitchen spice, dried fruits, citrus notes, flavours akin to a Rutherglen tokay. But importantly, the reason why I was so stunned was that these oak flavours reminded me so much of a very large but special Speyside distillery that used to pride itself on these aromas and tastes. And it’s Taiwanese!

Warenghem Roof Rye Double Maturation French Rye Whisky
500ml 43.00%
  Ret
$220.00

French rye whisky that's been double matured. Well that's a first for me. But the story behind this whisky is quite extraordinary. The first rye whisky produced in France, it was matured for 6 years in both used and new Breton oak and then shipped to Marseille for "two summers" of cooking! True story. And the taste? Leather, citrus fruitiness, rich & buttery. Quite unique. Only 60 bottles made it to Oz.

Zuidam Distillers Millstone 2001 12yo Oloroso Sherry Cask Dutch Single Malt Whisky

Well another first for me, a Dutch single malt whisky and matured in sherry oak. Curious thing is that the distillation date is 2001 and yet the bottling date is 2015. The distillery was founded in 1974 and comprises five still with production set at around 280,000 litres. So not a small concern by any estimation. Haven't tried it, but one retailer states, "rich honey sweetness with notes of sherry and spices." An earlier 12yo, distilled in 1999 gained 95pst from Murray with a very impressive review while another batch got a World Whisky Of The Year award by the Malt Advocate in 2013.

Zuidam Distillers Millstone 2001 5yo Lightly Peated Dutch Single Malt Whisky
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$158.00

All American oak and lightly peated at 20-25ppm from a relatively new Dutch distillery founded in 1974. Subtle hint of smoke but with plenty of fruitiness on the palate or as one pundit put it, "has rich tones of fruit and honey combined with vanilla and toffee on a foundation of peat and smoke. Rich honey sweetness with delicate spicy notes and a long smoky toffee finish." Can't wait to try it.

RUM
Cadenhead BMC Epris Distillery Brazil Rum
700ml 45.30%
  Ret
$145.00

And another first, a Brazilian rum hailing fro the Epris distillery. The distillate comes off a column still and in Cadenhead's words, "Nose: Very sweet, aniseed balls, shortcrust pastry and cloves, along with butterscotch and sweet chocolate. Palate: Treacle notes, molasses and then sweet fruity flavours such as mandarins and peaches. Finish: Dark chocolate, lots of liquorice intertwined with cranberries."

Cadenhead Classic Rum
700ml 50.00%
  Ret
$99.00

Cadenhead's entry level vatted rum and for 2017 now comes in a spiffy new package. According to the bottlers, "The classic is a blending of several dark rums from Guyana (Demerara mainly) the age is around 5-7 years old but they will use up to 10 year old for the consistency as and when needed. While their official tasting note: Nose: Let it breathe. Heavy molasses; tropical fruits; liquorice. Palate: Chocolate orange. Slightly spicy with a long finish. Excellent! Couldn't agree more.

Big, old fashioned demerara stye, but don't expect a big, dark rum as no colouring has been added. In their words, "Nose Rum most definitely with spice and fruit. . Palate Creamy and dry at the front but opens to a sweet crisp fruity tone as the dram crosses the palate, Victoria sponge and fresh cream then a little honeycomb chocolate with peppery sweet spices. . Finish Quite rich thicker than expected with some rather nice vanilla & spice."

Cadenhead Green Label Haiti Rum 9yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$119.00

Noe this is a first for me, rum from Haiti. Influenced by the French agricole tradition, this lighter in colour style is still big on flavour. All ex bourbon oak matured, no coluringa and it probably originated from that very famous distiller Barbancourt. In their words, "Nose Minty sweet notes along with a lively hit of eucalyptus at first but this is soon tempered by a rich sweet fruity note. Palate Sweet and very rich to start, some tropical fruits and all spice mingle with a rich oily middle palate of soft peaches and honey. Finish Clean soft fruity finish, summer on the beach comes to mind as this well balanced rum finishes its dance across the palate."

Cadenhead Green Label Jamaica Rum 13yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$139.00

Said to come from the Long Pond Distillery, so it should have been made through a continuous still. Full flavoured, no colouring, ex bourbon barrel matured and of course well aged! In their words, "Nose Summer pudding. Clean crisp green apples and grape juice. Palate Clean soft start, some sweet cookie dough raisin and vanilla pod, ice cream cones with runny honey tones. Finish Some oak and spice mingle with pears and spice, soft white fruits and a little citrus tone."

Cadenhead NMC Volcano Distillery Nicaragua Rum 11yo
700ml 62.00%
  Ret
$139.00

What a great name for a distillery! A big cask strength rum which Cadenhead's describe as, "Nose: Fruity, darker fruits – blackcurrant and figs along with rocket and other crisp leafs and a hint of gunpowder tea. Palate: Very creamy, roasted sweet potato sprinkled with nutmeg. Finish: Very moreish. Smooth elegant lingering creaminess with faint spice."
