Springbank 18yo

Medium to full bodied style, matured in both ex sherry (80%) and ex bourbon casks. Only 7800 bottles produced and now generally in short supply worldwide! This malt is all about precision & refinement...nothing is out of place: from the restrained nose of fruit cake with marzipan and a hint of pine smoke to the very long, lightly peated, crisply malty & fruity palate & dry smokey finish, this malt hums. And keeps on humming for quite some time. Tasting notes from the distillery as well: Nose: Full of authority. Rich and creamy at first, the nose develops to reveal vanilla, ripe fruits and marzipan before hints of sherbet, almonds and strawberries tempt you onwards to the first mouthful. Palate: A classic full-bodied dram. Thick and oily in texture with an extremely fruity and mellow taste which gives way to a sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour as it opens up. Hints of liquorice and aniseed. Finish: Sweet and chocolaty with some coconut, the finish is long and consistent with a pleasant smokey tingle.

Springbank 2001 8yo Vintage Batch 1

Just in! Latest release in the Springbank Vintages lineup and this time, this very tasty dram has been fully matured for 8 years in small oak casks, maybe this is an extension of last years PSI bottling? The nose is soft and fruity, hints of black berry & citrus fruit flavours wrapped up in butterscotch flavoured oak. But just smelling it gives no indication of what is to follow on the palate. Initially there is a big burst of flavour that just keeps on rolling down the palate. It starts angular, tight, zest and salty then the middle of your mouth is flooded with honey, cream and vanilla flavours. And it's only at then end do you taste the drying peat. What an experience...and it's only 8 years of age.

Springbank 21yo

RARE It's been a very long time between drinks as they. It really has been quite some time since the distillery has been able to release a 21yo again. I suspect there is a very intriguing story out there about why older Springers have not been released for quite some time. Before we get to this beauty a WARNING! Do not expect a copy of the old 21yo. This is a completely different beast. For me, it's dry, intensive and complex. No big, rich, sweetly raisined fruit in this dram, it's half way between being lean and sweet. As one blogger so rightly stated, "this is the modern Springbank austerity (minerals, brine & wax)" showing here. Background peat. But the flavour just lasts and lasts. More detailed notes to follow. And what's with the garish, gold lame packaging!! What were they thinking of?

Springbank 21yo Single Cask

Only 702 bottles released of this 21yo cask strength gem. Our allocation is pitiful to say the least. I'm still perplexed as to why they would bother with this release, wouldn't it takes some rare liquid away from their standard 21yo? But then again this is Springbank!

Springbank 25yo

Well it certainly has been a long time coming. After all the shenanigans of the past 20 years at Springbank, finally they have their flagship back. And look at the packaging!! This dram has been matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks before being married in port casks for the final few months of maturation. Only 1,200 bottles were released for worldwide distribution. The official notes read, "Nose: The nose is rich with a peated port influence. It’s redolent of the dunnage warehouse in which it was matured. Fruity too, but this time berries to the fore: blackberries, cranberries and strawberries. Palate: The port wine influence is perfectly balanced with flavours of sherry, plum jam, blood oranges and pink grapefruit. Finish: The finish is long, soft and elegant, with earthy, peaty and woody qualities."

For this year, the pack comprises the triple distilled, no peat, florally yet deceptively rich Hazelburn 12yo, the now classically salty flagship, Springbank 10yo along with the richly smoky Longrow NAS, believed to be the fab CV.

Aberlour 16yo Double Cask

The combination of Bourbon & Sherry maturation, leaves this malt luscioulsy smoothe and sweet. But there's a nice touch of spiciness that combines with the gentle oak, rich malt and balanced alcohol that stops this malt from being cloyingly sweet.

Aberlour 18yo

Love Aberlour, love sherry malts, so the combo of the two I just couldn't go past. Here's what John Hansell at The Malt Advocate wrote, "Once again, the sherry is prominent throughout, with its lush fruit, velvety texture, and sweet demeanor. But it’s not cloying or sappy — Rich, silky smooth, satisfying finish. Very impressive. The Aberlour 18 year old’s reputation remains intact!: 91pts." And from Tom Canavan, "A lovely, confident, satisfying, after-dinner Aberlour. Sherried Speyside at its best."

Aberlour A'bunadh Batch 51

Batch 51! And to think I really started my carreer with A'Bunadh with Batch 6!! Always big, bod and full sherried beautiful. From WhiskyCast in May 2015, "Want to complain about “inferior” no age statement whiskies? Don’t even try to raise that argument with Aberlour’s A’Bunadh. Batch #51 is bottled at a whopping 60.8% ABV, and the nose redefines the term “sherry bomb” with intense notes of figs, plums, raisins, dates, dark chocolate, manuka honey, and a subtle hint of oak. The taste is mouth-puckering, dry, and fruity at first…then turns spicy with clove and cinnamon notes. The spices fade to bring out figs, raisins, and dark chocolate notes that linger through the finish. Excellent! 91pts"

Aberlour A'Bunadh Batch 55

Well I never, Batch 55. A'Bunadh, you are a star! From WhiskyNotes, "Nose: a very clean, aromatic batch. Lots of berries, leathery notes and polished oak. Rum & raisins, some herbal notes, allspice and chocolate sauce. Vanilla, a little burnt sugar. Walnuts and cloves. Perhaps a little more oak-forward than other batches, but nicely so, with a bit of an American bourbon feel to it. Just a little alcohol kick. Mouth: again fairly oaky at first, with lots of high-octane sherry. Cinnamon cake, marzipan, candied orange peels, slowly joined by roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate. Big herbal notes, with a lightly bitter, mentholated edge. Cherry brandy. Enough fruitiness to fight the oak. Finish: oak and cloves, leading to dark chocolate. Still plenty of herbal notes. Very, very long."

An Cnoc 12yo

An Cnoc is a brand named malt that comes from Inverhouse's Knockdhu Speyside distillery. But don’t be deceived. This mid-weight dram has an intriguing and very complex presence on the palate that just draws you in, enticing you to sample more and more. The spirit is delicate and enticing but the oak is full and creamy: fat and mouthfilling. But then you start tasting the barley, citrus, the mild pepper and all spice flavours that livens up the middle palate. Great length too. As Murray says, “Shimmers with everything that is great about Scotch whisky…always a reliable dram, but this is stupendous. 94.5pts”

An Cnoc Cutter 20.5ppm Limited Edition

The good chaps at Knockdhu have finally ramped up the peat. This new (Dec 2015) edition is their peatiest yet at a rate of 20.5ppm in the bottle. The oak is all ex bourbon, so the flavour is that very familiar and very pleasing An Cnoc creaminess. World Whisky Award Winner 2015: Best Highland Single Malt No Age and in their words, "Full and broad palate opening with soft barley and lightly milky oak. The peat has a lovely sweet edge and hints of smoke, tar and herbs follow. Lovely, sooty and medicinal finish with a hint of citrus. The spirit has plenty of depth and richness to stand up to the peat."

An Cnoc Flaughter 14.8ppm Limited Edition

BONUS 50ML MINI An CNOC 12yo. I like what Knockdhu have done recently with their malts. The richness and purity of their regular 12yo has been very impressive. And now they have introduced peat! This time, the peat levels is slightly stronger. but it's still matured in American oak, with some barrels being re-charred. Much like the lighter Rutter but with less fruitiness but more intensity and loads of toasty and earthy peaty notes. It still amazes me that a little extra peat goes a long way.

Benriach Birnie Moss Intensely Peated

Benriach's big peated Speysider. In the early days it was quite a weird whisky but these later bottlings have been very good, Still intensively smoky at 35ppm but with a load more maltiness along with a touch of fruitiness.

Benriach Peated Quarter Cask

A new one for in 2017, Small casks mean lots of mature oak flavours in a young whisky, which is good for keeping the peat content high too. From WhiksyNotes, " relatively mellow and light. There’s sweet peat, sweet lemon and pear, as well as some earthy / sooty notes and Provence herbs. Also hints of nectarine."

Blackadder Raw Cask Dailuaine 1996 19yo

I've always had a soft spot for Dailauine and sadly, we don't see to many around in tihs day and age. There are only three official bottlings and only a small number of Indies have managed to bottle this rich and complex dram. So Mr Tucek turns one up! It has to be mine. Only 288 released, American oak matured and what pleases me even more? It's well aged and at cask strength with the bits in it.

Cadenhead Single Cask Aultmore 1997 18yo

The distillery at the heart of the ever popular Dewars blend and once not often seen as an official release, especially not an 18yo. But times are changing at Aultmore as the new owners, Bacardi, have now released as many as five new expressions. This 1997 18yo comes from the last of the UDV distillation as it was sold to Bacardi in 1998. A retailer notes, "more chewy than the nose suggests with soft toffee that is slightly drying and subtle aniseed and mint."

Cadenhead Single Cask Glen Grant 1984 31yo

Matured in a butt. That's all the tag says about oak type of this venerable whisky. Could it be a sherry butt? Does American oak come in butts? But (no pun intended) it does a darkish hue about it. I'll let Mark Watt explain the taste of this dram, "Slight caramel, redcurrants, chocolate, gooseberries and a short biscuity note." Mmmmm. 414 bottles released.

Cadenhead Single Cask Tomintoul 1985 30yo

Another distillery founded in the 1960's and has undergone a number of ownership changes, especially around the time this malt was laid down. In Mark Watt's words, "Apple strudel - fruit, spice and pastry notes working together well. Very refreshing and with a slight dryness. Long but with a slight tartness of stewed fruit that demands another taste simply because it's so delicious."

Cadenhead Small Batch Aberlour 1990 25yo

This 2015/16 release does not look like a standard Aberlour. And that's what I like about Indie bottlings: tasting a single malt in its natural state. In Mr Watt's words, "Yes it delivers from the first sip to the last. Light apple tones with orange peels, freshly squeezed fruit juice. Summer fruit cocktail richness that keeps going across the middle of the palate."
