Blog Post Three: Now I'm getting the hang of this…
When I first tasted this at a virtual tasting in June 2020, I was simply stunned. It is just so damned drinkable and best of all you can taste the malt (take note Aussie distillers). It's obvious and it's creamy. The oak and spirit are just the foundations for the malt. What a treat!
To be honest it's not the most complex malt I've ever tried, but when asked if I would have second glass? Yesiree, and make it a big one!!
Due to the vagaries of American distilling law and tradition, the chaps at Westward, based in Oregon in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, are forced to use new American oak. So the oak is sweet and buttery, but it does not distract from the glorious taste of malt. The spirit is clean. precise and perfumed.
And there is another feature with this distillery: it is based within a brewery, and the wash is the brewery's standard American Pale Ale.
