Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength
700ml 60.00%
  Ret
POA

The granddaddy of all cask strengths, can be a bit variable, but I don't mind that. This current batch shows lots of fresh sherry flavours, drying oak and the alcohol is intense but not hot. Go on, take a big mouthful and see what cask strength is all about! Buxton's 101.

Glenfarclas 12yo
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$160.00

This caught me by surprise at a recent 2012 tasting with Ian McWilliam from Glenfarcla. The 8yo is basic, the 10yo is not bad but the 12yo...what a big step up. Crisp, well defined, great maltiness and fresh sherried fruit notes. A real treat at a decent price. Even Murray thinks so, rating it 94pts and correctly mentioning the ice cream type texture. He also describes it as, "What a sensational success!"

Glenfarclas 15yo

GIFT Big, old fashioned full on sherry malt that is mightily impressive, plenty of dried fruits/ Christmas cake flavours, spicy oak and a very sumptuous palate. And it lingers & lingers. And 15 years of maturation is just about perfection for this malt. Bravo! And as a bonus gift, every bottle comes with a mini of the famed 21 and 25yo!

GIFT Boy oh boy! Was this a stunning standout at a recent Glenfarclas masterclass (June 2015). And what I love about this full sherried 'Farclas...it's so different from the either the 12yo and the venerable 15yo. My notes form the night, "Low, subdued sherry but excellent and yet solid mouthfeel. Plenty of fresh barley notes, very well integrated wood, which appears as fresh oak on the nose, and a palate jammed packed with honey, kitchen spice and dried citrus fruit flavours. Long, fresh sherry at the end that finished crisply but still lingers and lingers. Big ACE! for me." For Xmas 2015 it comes packed with 2 x minis 21yo & 25yo.

Glenfarclas 2007 9yo Whisky & Wisdom 1st Fill Sherry Butt
700ml 60.50%
  Ret
$380.00

Every so often and absolute doozy comes in through the door. And when it's young (read lively & fresh), full sherry (1st fill Euro barrels), cask strength (read intensity) and has a pedigree 9it's from Glenfarclas) you really do have to take notice. And this one squarely hit me in the face! It just has about everything a whisky imbiber dreams of: complexity, richness and power.

Glenfarclas 25yo
700ml 43.00%

POA

Another classic sherry monster from the good folks at Glenfarclas. In their words, "Nose: Complex, yet refined, delicately peated, with fresh tempting aromas of marmalade, honey, freshly ground coffee, sherry and nuts. Some oaky tannins. Flavour: Full-bodied and robust, the sherry and the oak fight for your attention yet neither is overpowering. A powerful nutty smokiness. Finish: Intense, long lasting, dry smoky and malty. A beautiful dark Belgium chocolate taste at the back of your mouth to complete the flavour of the 25 Years Old. Comment: A great after-dinner whisky so rich and full that it is a dessert in itself, with a finish that goes on forever. " July 2105 notes from the Big G, "Old school, yet spicy and bright. Massively long and wide palate."

Glenfarclas 511.19s.0d Family Reserve
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$280.00

A special release from Glenfarclas to help celebrate 150 years of the Grants owning Glenfarclas. Predominantly first fill sherry oak but a no age statement 43% dram that should be really tasty but in a lighter style, more like the current 17yo which is a gem. From WhiskyNotes DE, "soft but not weak. A whole lot drier than expected. Still some honey and golden raisins but also orange marmalade, nutty notes, cinnamon powder and nutmeg. Light toasted oak and a hint of burnt cake. Funny how the palate is more earthy and savoury than the nose suggested."

Glenfiddich 15yo Solera Reserve
700ml 40.00%

A solera is a system of fractional blending from a number of casks. Once full, what you take out from the last cask, which is to be bottled, you replace at the top with new spirit. Famously used in the production of sherries as it add uniformity to the style. So here we have one of only a handful of whiskies that are matured in this way. Kind of makes sense to me. And I believe it is a mix of bourbon, sherry and surprise, surprise....virgin oak.

Glenfiddich 21yo Gran Reserva Caribbean Rum
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$270.00

Nigel, an old and sadly passed away mate, introduced me to this dram and having long vowed to never to carry this brand, as I really can't compete against the "Great Twosome", I thought this dram was really quite good. Subtle, well put together, very polished, nothing out of place and yet the rum notes add a pleasing degree of interest and complexity. The whisky was only in the rum casks for 4 months.

Glenlivet 15yo Single Cask Edition Morinsh
700ml 56.30%
  Ret
$320.00

Well, wonders never cease! I normally have little to do with the whiskies of George & JG Smith, but a limited edition of 270 bottles (those so well used words) did catch my attention, mainly because it is at cask strength. From WhiskyNick, it appears that this dram is an exclusive bottling for an Aussie retailer, it’s all bourbon oak, to which he describes it as classic Glenlivet at full strength. I thought “classic Glenlivet” had a tad of sherry oak in it. I have heard described as, “bold, honey and ripe pears, rich, luxurious dark chocolate and sweet ginger flavours.” Sounds like a sherry cask to me. . My notes to follow shortly.

Knockando 12yo 1992
750ml 43.00%
  Ret
$140.00

An older bottling of this medium body, somewhat gentle Speysider. It belongs in the Diageo stable and is a major component of the J&B blended whisky.

Macallan 12yo Big Sherry Oak
1750ml 43.00%
  Ret
$780.00

It’s Macallan… It’s Sherried… It’s Huge! 11750ml of pure sherried joy. This is a dying breed. Age statements are on the way out and getting hold of sherry Maccas in Oz has become an almost impossible task, so this 750ml bottling comes from the USA. The nose is that inviting mixture of dried fruits, a hint of furniture polish, crisp malt and kitchen spicy oak. Brilliant, as the sherry fruit flavours appear not to be too fresh or too cloying. Big palate, long palate, there’s that famed Macca heavy weight spirit, grippy oak. The sherry influence is on the milder side, thus showing off that magic weighty Macallan spirit to its fullest. Lingering. Very much a treat.

Mortlach Rare Old
500ml 43.40%
  Ret
$165.00

This is art of the new incarnation of the fabulously rich, flavoursome and very hard to come by Mortlach. Matured both in bourbon and sherry casks. Be warned, it comes in a 500ml bottle. From Whisky For Every One, "On the palate this feels robust, a little feisty and hot. There is a lovely battle going on between the sweet, savoury and spicy notes. First comes delicious sweet notes of toffee, salted caramel and honeycomb. These are quickly joined by a luscious rich fruity characteristic which is reminiscent of a mix of raisins, dried mango and spiced orange. Underneath are notes of vanilla, crystalised ginger and vanilla pods, all of which are backed up and complimented by a distinct savoury characteristic. This manifests itself as a yeasty, slightly meaty note which adds depth, warmth and complexity. The finish is long and becomes increasingly dry with a lovely tobacco leaf/cigar-like earthiness coming through to compliment the sweeter elements."

Riverstown Auchroisk 2009 6yo
700ml 61.40%
  Ret
$150.00

Riverstown is an offshoot of Robin Tucek's Blackadder range. Most if not all Auchroisk is destined for the J&B blended whisky brand and the spirit has always has been a brisk style of malt. Not often seen as an official or and indie bottling. One retailer has described it as, "powerful, yet elegant, slightly sweet, with notes of caramel, fruit and light nuances of peat."

Singleton Of Dufftown Tailfire
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$110.00

Entry level Dufftown that was launched in 2014 but looks like it is matured in Euro oak sherry casks. So expect the richness of Dufftown spirit with plenty of fruitiness. And you have to be a fly fisherman to understand the name. I thought it had something to do with a big night in a UK curry shop?

Blackadder Black Snake Vat 1 Fourth Venom
700ml 59.90%
  Ret
$160.00

This is one of Robin Tucek's clever concoctions, as it is derived from a solera system. Here's how one retailer explains it, "The latest concoction of John Tucek, take some barrels single malt whisky, of which the distillery is not disclosed, let it mature into two ex oloroso sherry casks and through the so-called solera system the casks still be emptied for 2/3 from below and filled again from above. Soft and supple, long palate with gentle kitchen spice and dried fruits. Hint of peat.

Nose : Full, rich red fruit with Islay influences. Taste: Spicy, cherries, light oak and warming. Finish: Long, tasteful and delicious."

Blackadder Raw Cask Peat Reek
700ml 61.30%
  Ret
$180.00

This is Blackadder's big peat monster possibly made up a of one or a number of highly peated & assertive whiskies. And being Raw Cask, means you get the added bonus of the bits in the bottom of the bottle. Tasting notes to follow.

Cadenhead Aberfeldy 1997 17yo
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$145.00

The heart and soul of Dewar's big selling blended whisky but as a single malt, it's one we don't often see. So an aged, indie bottling should be a real treat. In their words, "Some herbal notes: sage and basil along with some soft woodiness. Some dried pineapple, white chocolate and more spiced apple notes to finish."
