IRELAND
Writers Tears Pot Still Irish Whiskey
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$110.00

A new Irish whiskey for Australia and one that Jim Murray got pretty enthused about, commenting, "a glossy Pot Still character" and he awarded it 93pts. All we know about it is that it is an interesting combination of single malt and Pure Pot Still grain whiskey and when I tried it, it came across as a crisply elegant drop, that's bright and very well balanced. Nothing is out of place and the oak is very subtle. All bourbon oak matured and it looks like it came from Midleton distillery.

INDIA
Blackadder Raw Cask Amrut Sherry Cask Finish
200ml 61.00%
  Ret
$90.00

Warning: 200ml bottle! Blackadder Raw Cask: It's the one with the bits in it and at cask strength! And for 2016, a private bottling of the famed Amrut which is exciting but also with the added benefit of it being fully matured in a sherry cask. Only 370 bottles produced.

Paul John Brilliance
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$110.00

Move over Amrut, there is a new kid on the block. And it is all comes down to the chairman of John Distilleries, a general distilled spirits business, Mr Paul P John making the bold move in 2012 of getting into the quality end of the single malt business. Copper pot stills, locally & Scottish sourced barley, ex bourbon barrels and climate controlled maturation. Jim Murray was impressed giving the Brilliance 94.5pts, declaring, "yet another astonishing malt from India." and as one blogger put it, "Sharp apple at first, leading into sweet mango and cream, sweet fruit, honey and a tingle of cinnamon spice. Water softens some of the cinnamon heat and brings out even more apple and sweet cream."

Copper pot stills, locally & Scottish sourced barley, ex bourbon barrels and climate controlled maturation. This is PJ's unpeated cask strength dram and as one retailer put it, "Oaky and sweet. Caramel, licorice, with a few drops of eucalyptus. Quite fresh and soft/silky." while another stated, "Packed with character, this expression is very exciting indeed."

Copper pot stills, locally & Scottish sourced barley, ex bourbon barrels and climate controlled maturation. Need I say more, especially as Murray in his 2014 Bible gave it whopping 96.5pts, stating, "A world class whisky to talked about with reverence without doubt..." Fine, complex, full of choc mint and a pleasing light peatiness.

Paul John Peated Select Cask

Move over Amrut, there is a new kid on the block. And it is all comes down to the chairman of John Distilleries, a general distilled spirits business, Mr Paul P John making the bold move in 2012 of getting into the quality end of the single malt business. Copper pot stills, locally & Scottish sourced barley, ex bourbon barrels and climate controlled maturation. With this dram, PJ used peated barley sourced from Scotland. The end result is a lively malt where the peat comes across as vegetal but there's plenty of oak and honey to balance it out.

JAPAN
Shinsu Mars Maltage Cosmo Blended Malt Whisky
700ml 43.00%
  Ret
$250.00

It's Japanese. It's from a relatively new malt distillery and it's a blended malt. And did I tell you that it's Japanese? Well it sort of is and it is sort of not as the make up of this blend is part Japanese and part Scottish. Fresh, youthful, malty, fruity with a hint chocolate.

USA
Blantons Special Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey Bottled 2011
700ml 40.00%
  Ret
$140.00

This is an earlier version of the famed Blantons Bourbon. Full, rich and flavoursome. And Blantons was one of those new wave American whiskies that hit us by storm in the early 2000's as they tasted noting like the "goog ol" bourbons we had on offer in this country at the time.

High West 6yo Rendezvous Rye
750ml 46.00%
  Ret
$110.00

And aged American rye. That's slightly unusual. This Utah distillery has certainly made it's presence felt in Australia. The distinctive dry grassiness of this rye is on full show. along with a touch of kitchen spice and of course, sweet vanilla oak.

Jack Daniels Sinatra Select Tennessee Whiskey
1000ml 45.00%
  Ret
$300.00

Well, well, well Old Blue Eye's in a liquid form. And as an extra bonus for this special release, it comes with a rather large leather Jack Daniels badged bag.

Jeffersons Ocean Aged At Sea Voyage No 6 Kentucky Straight Bourbon
750ml 45.00%
  Ret
$230.00

Aged at sea! Yep, that's correct.62 barrels, aged between 8 and 10 years were sent to sea for 6 months crossing the equator four times and calling into 31 ports. Why? Because the sloshing, the agitation, the temperature and humidity variations according to the blenders, speeds up maturation and adds complexity. Sounds like very much like what a certain crazy chap is doing in Tassie. And the taste? From The Whiskey Jug, "Overall this is some seriously tasty bourbon. Rich and deep in character starting at the nose and surging through the finish there are strongly defined bourbon notes blending with some unique briny characteristics that give this sourced bourbon an identity all its own."

Jeffersons Very Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
750ml 41.15%
  Ret
$125.00

Named after that most famous of of American revolutionaries and third Pres of the USA and a chap with a fondness for American whiskey. If we were in the UK we would call it an independent bottling, as the bottlers, McLain & Kyle buy in the spirit but age it themselves. And the results? With this entry level bourbon, very, very tasty, soft and supple but highly surprising. It is aged between 6 and 10 years in lightly toasted American oak and they only use from 6 to 10 barrels per batch. That's a certainly a change from the traditional high char with standard bourbon. The mashbill is 60% corn, 30% rye and 10% malted barley.

Jim Beam Beams Choice 1976 Great Dane Regal China Decanter
750ml 40.00%
  Ret
$140.00

In the 1970's, Beams Choice decanters were the hottest collectibles in the market. from trains, to cars, people, animals etc. And they used to fetch rather large sums of money. But ask any collectors what the whisky was like, they couldn't answer you. As they were never tasted. How do I know this? I spent over 10 years at Oddbins selling heaps of them. This one comes in the shape of a rather large dog.

Koval Single Barrel Bourbon
500ml 47.00%
  Ret
$130.00

Small batch and I mean, really small batch, hand crafted whiskeys from Chicago. And the quality? Exceptional. Real deft handling of oak makes these whiskies stand out while the spirit bill is a rather intriguing 51% corn and 49% millet. The distillery waxes lyrical about mango chutney, apricot custard, vanilla and peppery caramel and tobacco, Very close to what I tasted too!

Koval Single Barrel Four Grain Whiskey
500ml 47.00%
  Ret
$130.00

Small batch and I mean, really small batch, hand crafted whiskeys from Chicago. And the quality? Exceptional. With a mash bill of oat, malted barley, rye, and wheat this Chicagoan whiskey is rich and creamy like Mary-Anne's coconut banana cream pie.

Koval Single Barrel Millet Whiskey
500ml 40.00%
  Ret
$130.00

Small batch and I mean, really small batch, hand crafted whiskeys from Chicago. And the quality? Exceptional. I bought the other three Kovals based on style and quality but I had to get this one because of the grain type. I never have tried a millet only whiskey before (as I live a sheltered life). This is intriguing whiskey. From Whisky Won, " Caramel, and fresh charred oak, along with some sharp, spicy and ashy notes. Thereís a good grainy note to it as well Ė millet, I suppose? (Iíve only had it once Ė and I donít remember what it tasted like). We have banana cream pie amidst the grainy structure and spicy edge Ė I think itís quite well done."
