I've been searching for a new whisky glass for ages...something a little weird and something a little wonderful. And guess where I found it: on that most excellent Japanese blog site, Nonjatta! And guess where they are made: USA! And yes the Americans do like to export as well. So here we have it, a glass designed for nosing as well tasting...once you get used to it. But that's the fun with these glasses. They deliver all they promise, but you have to get used to it! Here's what Nonjatta had to say, "I compared the NEAT glass with Glencairn and copita glasses, using some reference malts that I thought I knew inside out. The results were fascinating, if a little unsettling: the reference malts were anything but reference in the NEAT glass. The malts seemed to completely redefine themselves and I picked up notes that I'd never found before. They revealed themselves in a completely different light, with much more intensity and depth in terms of aroma and taste and with much more overall presence and definition. Treat yourself to a set of NEAT glasses and you'll see what I mean - you won't regret it."

Palate: Icing sugar on fire, peppermint, oily and pleasant. Finish: Long and sugary with a slight bitter edge at the end. Comment: Obviously this stuff is not selling as it has now been available for 9yrs, but there's no good reason for that. This is good whisky. I want more." Pic indicative only.

Kavalan Oloroso Sherry Oak
700ml 46.00%
  Ret
$250.00

This distillery has certainly struck a chord with whisky aficionados across the globe. I’ve been told that this is a detuned, ie lower alcohol, Soloist. According to MaltMileage, “Overall, Kavalan sherry oak is a balanced, smooth, integrated, powerful, rich and flavoursome dry sherry bomb that projects hues of barley that glisten through the intricately woven oak notes.” And as he says, “it’s one of my favourites.” And scores it 94/100.

Kavalan Solist Sherry Cask
700ml 58.70%
  Ret
$300.00

I was gobsmacked when I tasted this dark dram with my colleagues in the Flinders’ Ranges the other week. It was oh so soft, lush and mouthfilling, very fruity, touches of furniture polish, kitchen spice, dried fruits, citrus notes, flavours akin to a Rutherglen tokay. But importantly, the reason why I was so stunned was that these oak flavours reminded me so much of a very large but special Speyside distillery that used to pride itself on these aromas and tastes. And it’s Taiwanese!

Kavalan Solist Single Cask Strength Sherry Cask
700ml 57.80%
  Ret
$550.00

The sherry cask releases from Kavalan have always been impressive and chocked full of flavour. This earlier release is no exception. I note that some describe is Dark Sherry. Only 546 bottles released worldwide. International Wine & Spirits Competition Double Gold 2011. Actual pic shown.

Mackmyra 2008 First Edition Roasted Swedish Oak
700ml 46.10%
  Ret

This First Edtion Roasted Swedish Oak is Mackmyra's first major release that defines the Mackmyra style - elegant flavours with hints of citrus and cream caramel. Matured in 100lt ex first fill bourbon casks and hand made roasted new Swedish oak, and in their words, "The colour is light yellow, with hints of amber. The nose is fruity with citrus, pear, apple, honey, light oak with hints of lightly toasted bread and fresh, buttery caramel. The flavour is fruity and subtle, with citrus, caramel and honey. A light hint of oak can be noted at the end. The aftertaste is well-adjusted and balanced, with hints of dark chocolate". And my words: Tight, intensive, fresh malted barley, creamy oak, citrus zest, crisp dry finish. In a word: mouthwatering, lasting. Extremely well made. Bravo! Mackmyra. Buxton's 101.
