Basil Hayden is part of Jim Beams Small Batch Bourbon series, unlike Bakers, Bookers and Knob Creek, this Bourbon is at a more respectable 40%. Out of the four, this is the, dare I say, the lighter one out of the series as it uses more rye in its the mash bill: 63% Corn, 27% Rye, 10% Malted Barley.
Originally an 8yo, in it’s current guise it is now a no-age-statement whiskey. But it’s still at 750ml.
First launched in 1992, Breaking Bourbon describes it as tasting of, “The palate is understandably light due to the 80 proof that Beam bottles this at. Light vanilla, new wood, and peaches mingle together and form the entirety of the palate. While the 80 proof makes this incredibly easy to sip, the mouthfeel is noticeably thin, and even at the bottling proof, this seems lighter than average. A few additional proof points would have gone a long way to deepen the palate.”
