I’ve been seeing a few fino sherry cask finished malts kicking around lately.  In the past these have been generally shunned, maybe because the sherry style is so dry.

So, Cadenhead have decided in their infinite wisdom to match this dry sherry style with Brackla’s fresh and fruity spirit.  According to, “The distillery set-up is all about creating and then capturing esters – the fermentation is long, the lyne arms of the stills are angled upwards, the copper conversation a long one, the reflux plentiful”.

Obviously, there is loads of copper contact, and now I can see why they chose these fino barrels for finishing off this whisky.  But, only in a very modest way, as this partially American oak matured whisky, spent approximately 12 months in these casks.

from Conossr, “Sweet then sour arrival. Lots of gorgeous sweet barley and oak, dark sweet notes of maple syrup and Caramac/Gold bars. Over ripe apricots, more white pepper and charred vanilla. Finish – med. More ginger, pleasantly drying oak and dark chocolate fudge. This is an absolute cracker, it really is. Big, bold and full-flavoured whisky that needs a wee bit of patience but is well worth it”.

Official notes read, “Manuka honey, orange peel, aperol spritz, walnuts.  Rock salt, sweet oats, raisins”.
