Equipo Navazos La Bota 89 Spanish Grain Whisky Dry Oloroso Cask

I had the chance try try this extraordinary spirit week or so ago.  And I was literally, bowled over.  Independent sherry bottlers Equipo Navazos matured Spanish grain spirit in one of the finest dry Oloroso casks I have ever tried.

And what an experience tasting this gem was.  This single cask is a real cut above the ones that are sent to Scotland.  But, don’t expect that sweet, fresh fruity style of oak so common in the spirits trade today.

The spirit has spent approximately sevens years in a non-disclosed cask followed by a further seven years  in what is described as, “a single cask coming from a solera of very old dry oloroso sherry of excellent quality”.

This dry, European oak Oloroso cask delivers layers of flavour, textures and complexity to a delicate, floral, mixed grain spirit.  And it is so perfectly balanced.  It’s almost that you are trying a superb dry Oloroso sherry but at 46%.

Official notes read, “This is a magnificent and super-fine spirit with tobacco and roasted grain notes and a gently smoky, peaty edge. Then there’s a lovely, honeyed sweetness, which lends the spirit an almost Bourbon-like quality without the overt vanillin. The spicy, saline and fully integrated close is as smooth as a baby’s bottom. Another incredibly intense yet classy spirit—unrepeatable, of course, as it’s a single cask release”.
