Description
Glann A Mor (Breton for “at the edge of the sea”) is a French distillery located in the heart of Brittany, and began producing single malts on a regular basis in 2005. And the style the owners wanted was unashamedly Celtic, definitely maritime, as the distillery is based by the sea, and regions proud cultural heritage.
This Kornog (Breton for “west wind”) is their peated single malt, approx 30-35ppm, that has been matured in Ex Bourbon barrels. Sadly, I can’t find any info on where the peat or barley was sourced but the distillery uses maris otter malt. And Roc’h Hir refers to a local coastal landmark.
From Whisky Advocate, “This has smoked fish, iodine, pine forests, driftwood, lemon zest, and clean medicinal qualities rather than peatiness. Waxed lemon, light fudge, lemon bonbons, and vanilla from the bourbon barrels ride a crescendo of pepper and ginger before smoke obscures all before it. A match for any Islay”.
The official notes read, “oily, cereal, crisp malt delivery with the finish upping the richness adding cocoa-laced peat, walnut slice and lanolin carrying through to the aftertaste. Exhibits a freshness, balance and staying power that belies its youth. A whisky that’s both delicious and distinctive”.
