This is rather an unusual offering from this famous family owned Speyside distillery.  As this 17yo was meant to be only released in the USA, Japan and Sweden.  But it has been on our shores for a number of years.

Also surprising, is that there is no 18yo in the core range, only the famed 15yo and then comes the 21yo.

So, a bit of a treat.  So,what do we have here?

I’ve been reliably told that the oak is all ex sherry.  Typical Glenfarclas I hear you say.  But my memory of tasting this one, some time ago, showed notes of American oak. But not to its detriment.  It’s a very classy, fully mature, complex, finely balanced and highly enjoyable dram.  But not an overblown sherried fruit bomb.

However, take  a look at these reviews…

From Connsr, “When I got home and poured a dram, memories of my first taste of Pappy Van Winkle 15 year old bourbon reappeared. Oh my God! This is PERFECTION!! 96pts”.

And from WhiskyReviewer, “Simply beautiful. A well-sherried whisky that is the Scotch equivalent of a milkshake, and in all of the best ways. Full bodied, well rounded, sweet from the sherry yet balanced throughout (i.e. not too sweet but just sweet enough). I got Tootsie Roll, brownie with walnut, and some fruit cake. This release works well at 86 proof and I’m a guy who has a fondness for cask strength.  Mouthfeel: Soft and slightly oily at first before turning a little bitter. Finish: A little spicy/some orange/citrus from the sherry cask and the cocoa from the nose stays with you throughout”.
