Glenfarclas 17yo

Description

This is rather an unusual offering from this famous family owned Speyside distillery.  As this 17yo was meant to be only released in the USA, Japan and Sweden.  But it has been on our shores for a number of years.

Also surprising, is that there is no 18yo in the core range, only the famed 15yo and then comes the 21yo.

So, a bit of a treat.  So,what do we have here?

I’ve been reliably told that the oak is all ex sherry.  Typical Glenfarclas I hear you say.  But my memory of tasting this one, some time ago, showed notes of American oak. But not to its detriment.  It’s a very classy, fully mature, complex, finely balanced and highly enjoyable dram.  But not an overblown sherried fruit bomb.

This release works well at 86 proof and I’m a guy who has a fondness for cask strength.  Mouthfeel: Soft and slightly oily at first before turning a little bitter. Finish: A little spicy/some orange/citrus from the sherry cask and the cocoa from the nose stays with you throughout”.
