Henriques & Henriques:  A privately owned company dating back to 1850, Henriques & Henriques is the largest independent producer and shipper of Madeira. They’ve been shipping wines under their own label from the island since 1925, and unlike most of the other shippers, they actually own some of their own vineyards.

Madeira: Madeira is a fortified wine from the island of the same name in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal. Often grown on terraced vineyards, Madeira is produced in a range of styles from off-dry to sweet, always with elegance and a distinctive, refreshing close.

From SimplyWines, “Lovely, seductive soft, quite creamy notes of walnut and bruised pear fruit, with a straw-like note. Te palate has a fine Fino sherry-like dryness and tiny saltiness as well as those nutty and dried apricot favours. There’s a complex, dry nut and burnt orange tang, with plenty of acidity that is well integrated and balanced. Very tangy and mouth-watering despite a certain richness”.

Official notes read, “Made predominantly from Tinta Negra Mole, with 20% Sercial in this case, Henriques & Henriques 5 Year Old blends are produced in an estufa process specifically set up for these wines.  Nutty, smoky bouquet which leads to an energetic and expansive palate etched with flavors of roasted almond, mandarin orange and dried honey”
