Innis & Gunn Caribbean Rum Cask Scottish Red Beer

My tasting colleague was dismissive, “The last time I had this, it was pretty ordinary.”  I was just about to pass on a sample, when a glass was purposefully shoved in front of me.

As with the previous three beers from I&G, I was once again very pleasantly surprised. This red ale, that was matured in an ex Caribbean rum cask (s), is full bodied, with some dark roasted malt flavours with just the right amount of dried fruits and demerara sugar notes plus oak spiciness to add a layer of intrigue to this big flavoured red beer.

And once again, so very well balanced.

Official notes read, “The aromas give way to palate-pleasingly punchy notes of fruit, rum and chocolate. This full bodied flavour is enhanced by the use of Innis & Gunn Ale Malt, Chocolate Malt and Roasted Barley. The finish in this one of a kind 6.8% ABV drop is warming yet mellow”.
