Vanilla. Toffee. Subtle sherry oak influence…
Description
Kingsbarns is another case where a highly successful independent bottler decides to become a distiller. In the this case it is the Wemyss family. And big congratulations to them too.
Especially as they are championing the Lowlands a region for whisky excellence.
Founded in 2014, the family aim to produce a fruity style of spirit, by slow distillation. After all the testing and trials, Belcomie is the first release of what is their core range of malts. And I like the honesty in their description of their oak aging: sherry casks that are American oak. The most common form of sherry maturation in the Scottish whisky business. But the industry doesn’t tell us about that.
From Whisky Reviews, “Honey and orange. Pepper and cinnamon. Lemon. Some warming ginger. Vanilla. Toffee. Subtle sherry oak influence comes through on the finish with some prune and more woody spice. Based on the drams I’ve tried so far, Kingsbarns deserve praise for the way they’ve allowed the character of their spirit to take centre stage”.
Official notes read, ” Sweet tinned pineapple up front, orange peel, cake spice. Lots of dried apricot and a hint of roasted hazelnut on the finish”.
