Description
What was once a rare phenomenon, now is pretty much standard practice with a lot of distilleries in Scotland. And what am I talking about? The making of peated and non peated malt in the same distillery.
And Tobermory is no exception, as their Ledaig range uses highly peated (39ppm) malt.
Funny thing is that Tobermory used to be called Ledaig. But that was dropped in the late 1970’s until Tobermory resurrected it in 2007 as their big smoky whisky.
From WhiskyRant, “Lots of crispy berries, little bit of vanilla. Addition of water brings toasted notes and fruits, and some spices. Sherry influence starts to take in even more, adding red dried fruits. Starts with crispy smoke. Stingy and fruity. Drops of water adds more smoke and makes the aftertaste peppery”.
Official notes read, “Powerful rich, sherried, herbal smoky flavours, orange peel, coffee, a touch of sea salt, tobacco and white pepper. Long and quite pungent with more smoke, a hint of liquorice and sea spray”.
