Macallan Edition No 5

The Macallan Edition series was a release of six bottlings that explored a range of flavours, textures and colours  that influence single malt whiskies.

Edition 1 was first released in 2015, so Edtion 5 was released in 2019. And number 5 was all about natural colour.  No caramel colouring, which did catch my attention.  As in the past, Macallan always declared the use of E220 (caramel) on their European back labels.  Just in case, has always been Macallan’s reasoning.

From MaltReview, ” Silky delivery. Coffee, cloves, allspice, ginger and lovely salted caramel sweetness. White pepper. Plenty of dried fruits, as expected, raisins, with dried cranberries too. A rich damson chutney (I imagine this goes very well with cheese). That salted note returns late on – and it balances out that sweetness effectively. Bitter dark chocolate, tobacco and a hint of charcoal. But that silkiness!”.

Also worth noting from MaltReview is the cask make up of this dram, ” That cask breakdown is first-fill bourbon barrels, second-fill hogsheads/butts, first-fill Tevasa Cooperage hogsheads/butts, first-fill Vasyma Cooperage butts, and first-fill Hudosa Cooperage hogsheads/butts. As you can see, lots of fresh wood, with an almost undead zombie barrel thrown in”.macallan-ltd
