Description
From the giant Midleton distillery comes one of the true marvels of Irish whiskey making, the Very Rare. Created by Master Distiller Barry Crockett in 1984 and now carried on by the current Midleton Master Distiller, Kevin O’Gorman.
The notion being that once a year, the master distiller, picks some of the best spirits at Midleton for a special blend, the Very Rare.
Maturation is done in ex bourbon (American) oak and it is claimed that the spirit, which is both malt and grain, with probably some un-malted barley as well, is aged between 12 and 25 years.
From GreatDrams, “On the palate, you will taste crisp green apple notes, creamy oats, golden syrup, toasted oak, and warming winter spices. The finish is ridiculously smooth, leaving you with more mixed fruit and winter spice notes, and a touch of toasted oak smoke. This drink is dangerously easy to drink”.
Official notes read, “Luscious at first with succulent fruits and a distinctive creaminess along with a herbal quality akin to camomile tea. The pot still spices add depth and intrigue as they weave amongst the floral grain qualities found lingering throughout. The charred oak’s influence continues to build over time creating additional complexity as the wood-derived spices complement the ever-present fruits of candied orange and dried apricot. Finish: The fruits and pot still spices build to a crescendo before giving way, leaving the final say to the oak tannins and antique grain whiskey”.
