Spirit Thief Belgrove French Oak Mataro Tasmanian Single Malt
Here we go with one of the great characters in Australian whisky production, Mr Peter Bignall, having a crack at a single malt whisky. His reputation, as doubtless you know, not on malted barley, but spirits made from rye barley.
From my initial tasting notes, this private bottling is bright an lively, as the the high strength alcohol certainly drives the palate. The oak is grippy, with feint hints of musty spiciness, the malt is crisp and there’s a perfumed fruitiness that I presumes comes from the wine once held in the cask.
