Thomson Manuka Wood Smoke Progress Report New Zealand Single Malt Whisky

The Thomson distillery is based in Auckland and was founded in a brewery in 2014. They released their first malt in 2018.  The distillery is small, hands on and crafty oriented.

And the two malts we have just landed are works in progress.  But what a start: one is locally peated, the this one is smoked with Manuka wood.

From WhiskyBase, “I like this very much, dare I say it is unique. It is fresh and minty and salty. There is some fruit just it the background and it stays there and it works. This feels like it wants to be dry but it never gets there. There is some sweetness but it’s more like brown sugar. There is some smoke notes as well, a lot going on”.

The official notes read, “This ‘work in progress’ bottling offers natural smoke, cinnamon, clove, and Manuka oils”.
