Description
I’ve waxed lyrical about Shand’s distilling skills at Tria Prima, especially his spirit quality. So fruity and intriguing.
With Shaman, it is ex Bourbon oak (ie American oak) to the fore. And once again, it so expertly handled. The overt sweetness you can get from American is not there. There is cream, coconut and other oak spices, but in a subtle way. And for me, this just shows off the spirit and malt so well.
And come to think of it, if you have issues with your spirit, a good way of hiding it is to load the whisky up with excessive, sweet oak.
You can’t hide anything when the oak is just so supple. Bravo.
From Shand, “It has a rich fruity nose, with spices and vanilla on the palate, followed by a lingering peppery finish”.
